Couples Therapy

Couples therapy is a type of psychotherapy in which a therapist with clinical experience working with couples, most often a Marriage and Family Therapist helps two people involved in a romantic relationship gain insight into their relationship, resolve conflict and improve relationship satisfaction utilizing a variety of therapeutic interventions. Although the practice of couples therapy may vary depending on the therapist’s theoretical orientation, all couples therapy tends to involve the following general elements:

  1. A focus on a specific problem (i.e. sexual difficulties, Internet addiction, jealousy)

  2. Active participation on the part of the therapist in treating the relationship itself, rather than each individual separately.

  3. Solution-focused, change-oriented interventions early on in treatment.

  4. A clear establishment of treatment objectives.

Couples therapy will usually begin with some standard interview questions regarding the history of the relationship as well as some exploration into each partner’s family-of-origin, values and cultural background. The therapist might use the initial sessions for crisis intervention if necessary.

Child and Adolescent Therapy

Children and adolescents, or teens, build social skills and emotional intelligence as they grow. These things often lead to healthy, happy lives. But some kids have emotions or behave in ways that disrupt their well-being.

Learning about children's mental health issues can increase your knowledge of how to help. Assisting your child to develop a healthy self-esteem through play-therapy and talk therapy can set the foundation to their adult years.

Family Therapy

Family Therapy is designed to address specific issues that affect the psychological health of the family, such as major life transitions or mental health conditions. It may be used as the primary mode of treatment or as a complementary approach.

Families can benefit from therapy when they experience any stressful event that may strain family relationships, such as financial hardship, divorce, or the death of a loved one. In addition, it can be effective in treating mental health concerns that impact the family as a whole, such as depression, substance abuse, chronic illness, and food issues, or everyday concerns, like communication problems, interpersonal conflict, or behavioral problems in children and adolescents.

Family counseling aims to promote understanding and collaboration among family members in order to solve the problems of one or more individuals.
